What are the Standard Widths for Towel Radiators ?
Towel radiators come in a variety of standard widths to suit different bathroom sizes and design preferences. These widths typically range from 300mm to 1200mm, with increments of 100mm. Just like most things, we can classify them as small, medium and large :)
Small - 300mm to 400mm Wide
The narrower widths, such as 300mm and 400mm, are ideal for smaller bathrooms or cloakrooms where space is limited. They provide a compact and efficient solution for drying towels while also adding a touch of style to the space.
Medium - 500mm to 600mm Wide
For medium-sized bathrooms, towel radiators with widths of 500mm or 550mm are commonly chosen. These widths strike a balance between functionality and aesthetics, offering enough space to hang and dry towels while still fitting comfortably within the room. They are versatile options that can complement various bathroom styles, whether modern or traditional.
Large - 700mm to 1200mm Wide
Larger bathrooms or those with a higher demand for towel drying may benefit from towel radiators with widths of 700mm or more. These wider radiators provide ample space for multiple towels, ensuring they dry quickly and efficiently. Additionally, wider towel radiators can make a bold statement in the bathroom, becoming a focal point of the space. It's important to consider the available wall space and the overall design of the bathroom when selecting the appropriate width for a towel radiator, as it should harmonize with the existing decor and layout.
How Do I Measure the Width & Pipe Centre of a Towel Radiator ?
Measuring the width and pipe centre of a towel radiator is a straightforward process that requires a few simple tools. To begin, you will need a tape measure, a pencil, and a level. Start by measuring the width of the radiator from one end to the other. Place the tape measure at the outer edge of one side and extend it across to the opposite side, ensuring it is parallel to the floor. Take note of the measurement and write it down which is the overall width of the towel radiator. Unlike conventional radiators, most towel rails have their inlet points (this is where the pipe work connects to your radiator) at the bottom of the vertical bars facing the floor. Hence, the overall width of the towel radiator you have measured will be absolute maximum space the radiator will take on your wall. In other words; no other parts, pipes, valves or similar will protrude from the sides requiring more space than the width of the towel radiator.
To measure pipe centres you will need to turn the radiator upside down and locate the inlet points. This is where the pipes connect to the radiator using valve tails and is crucial for proper installation. To find the pipe centres, measure the distance from the "centre" of the inlet point of one side of the radiator to the centre of the inlet point on the other side. Do not measure from inside to inside or outside to outside! Always take the centre of the holes for an accurate measurement. Use the tape measure to determine this distance precisely and write it down with a pencil.
Here is a Tip:
If you are replacing a standard type radiator with a towel rail and looking to get one similar size to reduce any pipe work modification, always measure the existing pipe centres from one pipe to another and "never" measure the radiator width. On standard radiators inlet points are located on the side of the radiators, meaning the pipe centres of standard radiators will always be "greater" than the total width of the radiator (Radiator Width + Valves). However, on towel rails this is the opposite and pipe centres will always be "less" than the total width of the towel rail as the inlet points are located at the bottom of the vertical bars. They are usually 50mm less than width of the towel radiator. For example; an 800mm wide towel radiator will have pipe centres as 750mm. This is same with other widths too and the pipe centres on a 400mm wide towel radiator will be 350mm. Simply take out 50mm from the ladder type towel rail's width to work out the pipe centres.
